Although Tharpe Street is one of Tallahassee's busier streets, much of its west end has no sidewalks. But now a federal grant will bring sidewalks and other improvements to the street in a few years.

Leon County Commission Chair Cristian Caban says Tharpe Street from Ocala Road to Mission Road is downright dangerous for pedestrians.

"Dirt paths where children and families literally walk on the road just to go to school, just to go to the store, just to participate in their everyday lives."

But the federal government has now given a $23.5 million grant to the Blueprint Intergovernmental Agency to build sidewalks and make other improvements to West Tharpe Street. Construction should be underway by 2030.
